Some groups, such as poor people and people from rural areas, think universities should make it especially easy for them to get access to university education. To what extent do you agree or disagree？

When it comes to the disadvantaged groups in the society, people always believe that they should be given special concern in various fields including higher education. As far as I am concerned, the disprivilagd students, such as those who live in poverty, should be cared for, but not given privileges in terms of entry to universities.

Some people, with a compassionate attitude toward students from poor families and rural areas, attempt to justify the educational privilege offered by universities to them, reasoning that it will help to compensate for the deficiency of their previous education. It is beyond dispute that educational diaparities do exist in different social groups. To illustrate, the less developed regions may not have been provided with sufficient facilities for education, i.e. schools and classrooms, and high tuition fees have denied poor students’ access to some renowned learning institutes. However, both those problems should be fixed by the government in the primary and secondary phases of their education. It is simply not reasonable to leave this responsibility to universities, which, as is known to all, are the place for scientific research and higher education.

Further, there would be problems if certain social groups were granted with exceptional advantages in college education. For one thing, it is a violation of the priciple of fair competition; for another, students admitted to a university without adequate knowledge and skills will be likely to feel inferior to the other students, which will consequently result in some psychological problems.

To draw a conclusion, sympathy to the less privileged groups is understandable, but the proper approach to solve their educational problems is to invest more in the teaching and learning facilities available to them, so as to equip them with equal eligibility for being admitted to universities.

These days, it is common to see an increasing number of open-plan offices and schools, particularly in most major cities where there is limited area for buildings. The main reason for this trend is cost, of course, since the value of floor space has been rising. While having an open-space design is usually cheaper, it is worthy of more research on the pros and cons of this development.

To begin with, being cheaper in cost is certainly not the only positive aspect about the growingly popular open-space concept. Regarding the construction of schools or universities, the open-plan design is meant to play the dual role of social interaction among students and environmental enhancement on a compact campus in the urban setting. This is made possible by eliminating barriers such as walls, fences and hedges that traditionally used to separate distinct functional areas. Meanwhile, such advantages may as well happen to the office floor. It is argued that there are better interaction between staff, less distinction between different rankings of co-workers, more flexible space, and more natural light because of the removal of inteior walls. All these serve to explain the popularity of the open-space design.

As often as not, the open-space design may just turn out to be a negative development leading to stress, if nothing else. On the campus, it is reported that students are exposed to high levels of stress in their learning activities. Surveys repetively show the majority of them are experiencing significant stress as a result of interpersonal conflicts, self-esteem complexities, time constraints, academic frustrations and emotional problems. Similar effects are even more apparent in the working environment on the office floor. For instance, it is hard for staff to concentrate due to lack of privacy and feeling of being watched. What is more, problems of constant noise are likely to lower staff performance.

To sum up, there are both good things and bad things about open schools or open offices. While the recent trend toward the open-plan design can be explained as at least cost-efficient, it is also important to know that those benefits are typically offset by myriad distractions and stressful situations. Choosing a suitable career is becoming increasingly important to many young people, especially for fresh graduates from college. However, it faces various obstacles during the process.

First of all, with the lack of experiences, young people hardly realize what are the suitable jobs for themselves. Job descriptions simply illustrate the work contents in a written form that might mislead the young job seekers. Secondly, intense competition is another crucial reason for such phenomenon. Each year, thousands of graduates entering the labour market whereas there are limited vacancies for these less experienced young people. Meanwhile, with the rapid growth of technology, a great number of companies have increased their hiring standards for employment.

Although, there are several ways for young people to obtain a suitable career in the future. Planning early is one of the most important methods. Young people should try to experience various job functions to better understand themselves what the real suitable jobs are, such as doing internships or part time jobs. Throughout the world people are paying more and more attention to their health. They try to stay healthy and fit, so they can work and enjoy life more energetically. However, often there is a lack of knowledge about the right ways of achieving and maintaining a healthy life, especially in today’s world where there is an increasing variety of choices when it comes to food and other nutritional products. In my opinion the government is not doing a good job in this respect. Firstly, in the school education system, there is little information about the knowledge of nutrition or healthy diet. From elementary education to college education, students have been studying core subject such as maths, English or physics, which are compulsory subjects mandated by the government. But they have little chance to acquire knowledge that is directly related with their daily diet. For example, high school students may be able to memorize the periodical table of elements, but they are unable to tell which nutritional element can be found in which type of food. This, in a sense, is the fault of the educational system that the government has designed. Secondly, to the general public, I don’t think the government is doing a good job either. This can be seen in the countless advertisements about food and drugs that are present on TV, in newspaper or magazines. We can often find a piece of advertisement claiming how magical a type of food or drug is. But often this is exaggerated or even false. As a result, the general public is confused about which food is really healthy or which nutritional products are really helpful for them. The government should have imposed a stronger censorship against these types of advertisement.

Finally, to some specific groups of people in the society, the government has ignored, sometimes

purposefully, their responsibility of educating them about healthy diet. Take cigarette smokers as an example. As far as the cigarette industry is concerned, the government is obviously not doing what they can to reduce the sales of cigarettes. I think this is because the government is not really willing to do so, as this would significantly reduce the revenue of the government. A responsible government should explicitly inform smokers that smoking is dangerous to people’s health and can lead to lung cancers and other fatal diseases. However, currently, what we see is only a small warning printed on cigarette packets. Smokers are already used to these warnings and have become insensitive to them. I think the

government should think about new ways of educating people of the dangers of smoking. The best way is to ban the production and sales of cigarettes completely. I think the same argument goes for other groups of people who are addicted to fast foods, or sweet foods, etc.

So in conclusion, there are many areas in which the government can do a better job in terms of

educating students, the general public, or specific groups of citizens about healthy life styles and the dietary and nutritional knowledge associated with such life style.

I believe that field trips are a very important part of a child’s education. Field trips can capture the

imaginations of children and make them more excited about learning. They can introduce young kids to

new aspects of the outside world. Finally, field trips are excellent ways to get parents more involved in

There are few better ways to get a child excited about learning than taking them on a field trip. It could

be a visit to a history museum to see recreations of the early settlements of their country or a trip to the

marina for whale watching. No matter the location or subject matter, the lessons instantly come alive

and become vivid to the children. Some students may not listen very well when their teacher reads to

them in class or struggle with their homework, but seeing something right in front of them is hard to

ignore. This is especially true when they have also journeyed out of the classroom to a new location,

which certainly breaks up the usual routine and delights young imaginations. Even the bus ride is

usually pretty exciting to children! They’ll learn a lot over the course of the day and might not even

realize it because they’re having so much fun.

Another important aspect of field trips is that, in getting young kids out of the classroom, they help the

kids learn how to function out in the world. There are small protocols for many different locations that

seem obvious to adults, but children might not be aware of. Field trips provide an opportune time for

them to learn that they must speak quietly at the library or that they might want to wear casual shoes at

a farm. Small things like this are best taught through experience and help to make the kids a bit wiser

about the large world outside of home and school.

Field trips also provide great opportunities for parents to get more involved in the education of their

children. More often than not, teachers bring along a couple of parent chaperones when they take the

students on a field trip. This gives parents a rare chance to see their child in an educational setting for

several hours in a row. They can see precisely what their son or daughter is learning about, how they

receive information, and how they interact with the teacher and other students. It can be quite difficult

for some parents to find out information about a typical school day from their young son or daughter.

Field trips give parents a better glimpse of everything.

That’s why I believe that field trips are wonderful and important to a child’s education. Field trips

provide memorable and exciting experiences that help children learn, they teach young kids a bit about

how to act in new settings, and they give parent chaperones an insightful glimpse into the education of

their child.

Question：Some students prefer to have their final grades determined by numerous small

assignments, whereas others prefer to have their final grades determined by only a few large

assignments. Which do you prefer and why?

I prefer to have my final grade determined by numerous small assignments rather than one or two large

assignments. That way, procrastination is less likely because I’m sharply focused on the frequent due

dates. I also tend to learn more throughout the semester and each assignment is less stressful because

they aren’t worth a huge percentage of my total grade.

Procrastination can be a big problem for some students, myself included. When there are only a few

large assignments in a class, there can be several weeks in a row where we aren’t required to turn in

any work. The assumption is that we are studying or writing at home in the meantime. However, I

know that this can sometimes lead to procrastination on my part. I take advantage of the situation and

think I can take a few days to relax before getting to work. But more and more time goes by and

suddenly I am scrambling to complete the assignment before the due date. Turning in smaller

assignments more frequently prevents this scenario. The structure doesn’t allow me to fall behind

because something is always due in the near future.

These frequent assignments also assure that we students are learning more throughout the semester. For

example, if each small assignment covers one chapter from the textbook, then my classmates and I will

read each assigned chapter because we must. A test or new assignment is always around the corner to

check our work. But such specific studying isn’t really necessary if we don’t even turn anything in until

midway through the semester. Certain chapters might get skimmed or even skipped out of perceived

unimportance. Maybe we save time, but we are receiving less information overall, which isn’t good.

Finally, having only a few large assignments can be tremendously stressful. I’m always well aware that

doing poorly on an essay could result in me failing the entire class if the essay is worth a large

percentage of my overall grade. This can have a nearly paralyzing effect on my work because the

pressure is just too much. Nothing I do seems good enough when the assignment is that important.

Having several smaller assignments is much more pleasant because I know it isn’t the end of the world

if something goes wrong with one of them. My grade won’t be affected too terribly. I’m then more

confident and at ease in my work.

That is why I much prefer having my grade determined by several small assignments instead of a few

large assignments. I’m not allowed to procrastinate, I engage more with the subject matter over the

course of the semester, and I’m not overwhelmed with stress because of massively important

assignments.
